Latest amendment to website - 1/9/10 Members Section - Monthly Challenge & Urgent Message
Welcome to our website

Stonebow Field Archers are based on a private farm located on the outskirts of the village of Sandhutton, Nr Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

The club was established in 2007 and we now have over 40 members. We are ideally situated being the only field archery club within a 40 mile radius! We are affiliated to the National Field Archery Society but welcome anyone who may be affiliated to the GNAS, BLBS or indeed any other archery organisation. If you have never tried archery before then please just let us know and we will be happy to help you enjoy our wonderful sport. Watch here and Here

(please note the videos may take some time to download depending upon the speed of your internet connection)

For more information on what Field Archery actually is, please see our 'How to Join' section.

Just a couple of our targets!

As mentioned, the club is located in approximately 9 acres of private woodland and is a haven for wildlife with deer, hare, pheasant, fox, badger, rabbit, jay, buzzards and a host of other animals & birds making it their home. It is not unheard of for a deer to pop up out of the brambles within yards of you whilst shooting, or to spot a buzzard in the skies above the farm. It really is an idyllic place. So much so that sometimes members spend more time sitting in the club caravan looking for wildlife than shooting!

As we are guests of the farmer we take the management of the wood very seriously and we have created a 30 target course including  3D targets, which is both technically challenging yet easy to negotiate, making it ideal for all ages and abilities. The club is growing all the time and our members range in ages from 8 – 77, and covering all abilities.

We welcome new members all the time, whether experienced or not.

Archery - It's the Law !

Here is a copy of the law that remains in statute to this day regarding archery training. So if you don't join us, we'll grass you up to the authorities!!!

A Statue imposed by King Henry VIII and written by the King in the 6th year of his reign (1515) was an amended, more specifically detailed version to replace an earlier Royal Statute of 1363:

And boyers for everie bowe of ewe, to make two of Elme wiche or othere wood of meane price, and if thei be founde to doe the contrarie, to be committed to warde, by the space of viii daies or more. And that buttes be made, in everie citie, towne and place accordinge to the law of auncient time used, and the inhabitantes and dwellers in everye of them to exercise themselfe with longe bowes in shotinge at the same, and elles wher on holy daies and other times conveniente. And that al bowstaves of ewe, be open and not solde in bundles nor close. And that no stranger not being denizen, shall convey oute of the kinges obeilance (?) anie bowes, arrowes, or shaftes without the kinges speciall license upon paine of forfaiture, and also imprysonment nor use shotynge in anie longe bowe without the kinges license, uppon paine to forfaite the bowes and arrowes to the kinges subjectes that will Seaze them. The Statute thereof is ANNO 6. H8. Cap:2.
This Act has ever been repealed - so fathers ( or 'governors') with male children over the age of 7 - you face a fine if you have not provided them with a bow, two arrows and taught them how to shoot!
